The beach resort of Amanpulo (peaceful island) is located on its own private island.  Called Pamalican, this coralline slip of an island is all but surrounded by reef.  Beyond are sandbanks and a channel, where dolphins and sea cows have been known to stray.  At its widest point, the 5.5 kilometer island of Pamalican is only 500 meters across.  From Manila, Amanpulo is just over an hour’s flight away.

Amanpulo, 40 casitas, 65 square meter bungalows in hillside and beachside settings, are modeled after the Philippine bahay kubo (native hut). Guest gets around on open-sided, gasoline-powered carts.  Each casita is designed to reflect the islands, with coconut-shell tables, a king size bed with a rattan headboard and sliding-glass doors that lead to outdoor decks and his-and-her divans.  Nearly half the space in a casita is given over to a Cebu marble bathroom with separate changing areas.
